Greg Verlander writes, "What a great year of hunting for me! I was very lucky to not only draw an Archery Bull Tag in Arizona but also a Coues Whitetail tag as well. Hunting these Coues bucks entails lots and lots of sitting and glassing, especially long distances. Coues deer remind me of hunting Cotton tail rabbits as they seem to be nocturnal and very cautious. They also love to bed down and hide in steep nasty canyons and thick brush.
I enlisted the help of my good friend Roy Morales, a native of Arizona. Thank goodness I did. We glassed an area we had glassed 2 days prior with no luck and almost immediately Roy spotted this fine animal at 520 yards away. We could tell he was a decent buck because of the mass this buck had at that range. Knowing that he was heading to a bedding area, we planned a stalk to get much closer and quick, as we didn’t want to lose him while he bedded down. Having snuck to within 320 yards now, we started glassing again. Thanks to Roy, we picked up the buck again. Having been an archery hunter most of my life, I was a little skeptical at this distance but realizing I couldn’t get any closer without loosing site of this buck I decided to give it a try. With a good solid rest and a good broad side shot I let the bullet fly from my 270 WMS. Roy shouted out, "You got him, good shot!". What a relief. I was truly blessed as we managed to harvest this beautiful buck.
This Coues makes two for two for me as I harvested one last year as well. This one scores 100 gross and the buck I bagged last year scored 101. Thanks to the good lord and my good friend, Roy Morales, this was a very memorable and exciting hunting experience. I’m looking forward to 2007!"
