Marty Cowin, aka Buckfever, sent us these photos of the big bulls that he and his buddy, Larry, harvested while hunting Mount Dutton in southern Utah.
Marty writes, "We found that the pressure from the AR-301 bowhunt on the unit was staggering. It also lasted until the day before our hunt strarted. The elk were really holed up from the pressure. Although they would bugle at night, they were far less vocal during the daylight hours. Also, there were so many bowhunters using cow calls that the lead cows were wise to them. The 6x6, 325 B&C bull that Larry harvested had 8 cows with it. I shot my bull on Thur. morning, and it was the 6th bull that I had seen. Two different bulls were bugleing back and forth about every 3 min. I moved in on what I thought sounded like the deeper bugle. When I caught up to him he had about 20 cows with him. I took him at about 70 yards with a 7mm mag. He was a heavy 6x6 that scores 302 B&C pts. It was the first morning that I had heard bulls bugle after the sun came up. Although there are a lot of nice elk on Mt. Dutton, the quality of the hunt, because of the bowhunt pressure, was pretty poor. I hope that the DWR will address this problem soon. It is beautiful country to hunt though. I would like to thank all my friends from this site who shared info. with me about the unit before we hunted it.
