Paunsaugunt - Kane County, 1971
Boone and Crockett 242 Pts.
Roy Willis, Joe Hughes, Mayo, and Helen Sabriski set off on their
hunting trip. They decided to head for the low country in what is now the famous lower Paunsaugunt
unit in southern Utah. They went up over the "Sand Ridge" toward "No Man Mountain."
As they started to push the canyon looking for the "big one," it started to snow like a devil and it was hard to see. Then, out of nowhere, jumped an incredible non-typical mule deer, taking them all by surprise. Roy took the first shot, but the buck continued to run. As he came by Joe, he took a shot. They hurried to where Roy had shot and found a blood trail. They continued tracking through the heavy snow and soon found the buck dead. He was a great non-typical! They began to clean the buck and Joe started to cut the deer's throat. Roy hurried to stop him, saying he wanted to mount this one. Joe said it was an exciting hunt and this buck was truly one of the last of the big ones. |
