"Got It Done - I was unable to fill my controlled hunt tag earlier in the season, both of my buddies got their 1st bucks on our first trip but I was being a little more selective and focusing on getting their bucks for the most part. My calendar has been pretty full all month so with 1 last chance to get away Saturday I made a run at it fully planning to shoot the first 3 point or better that I saw.
Started glassing at first light and didn't turn anything up until about 30 minutes in when I found a group of 13 does, a while later I spotted 2 other hunters working their way along some draws about 1/2 mile off. There were 2 does in a draw right next to them and they sat down for about 15 minutes and then they fired a shot. I was looking around them then trying to see those does and gauge their reaction to the shot and see if any others had been hidden in the draw along with them, never did find those deer but did find another group of about 20 does that had come out of another draw 2 draws to the north of them, I was trying to put antlers on any of them when the buck came trailing out a little late, mind you I'm watching all of this unfold from 3/4 mile so I check the other hunters and they are recovering a deer so my buddy and I start hotfooting it over to where we last saw the deer before they dropped into the next draw. As we got closer I glassed up a large 4x2 that had joined the other group of 13 does and several other small doe groups that were spread between where we had last seen the buck and that other group.
The does that were with the 4x2 picked us off at about 500 yds as we were trying to make our way across an open face with no cover. I kept moving forward once we put a large rock outcropping between us and them. At this point I wasn’t 100% sure that the 4x2 wasn't the same buck I had seen originally as both had pretty close to the same frame. Well when I got to where I could peek around the rock outcropping I saw the does with the buck trailing at about 750 yds moving away very quickly. I still thought the other buck may be in there as there was a lot of terrain directly in front of us that we couldn't see yet. I slowly crept up the rocks and saw my buck at about 200 yds with 8 does. He stood broadside and I had to wait for 1 doe to clear and as soon as she did I sent a 110 grain accubond right through the boiler room."
